photo-112Lulu has Monday’s off, which means Juliette gets to spend the day hanging with grandma. And I get to spend the day with my favorite little boy and my laptop. This work day was especially nice, since Xerxes also needed some coffee shop time and we planned to meet around noon.

Zed and I must not have slept well, because I was half awake & cranky when Xerxes handed me coffee and an Egg in a Hole. It was finally appreciated once I took a breath, vaguely remembered some crazy dreams and had that first sip.

By the time I finally made it to the coffee shop, I was quite hungry again. They had a nice frittata with a few lettuce leaves on the side that I devoured. I also bought a Bhakti Chai, which is one of my favorites since it is more spicy than sweet.

Remember that sugar fast? Well, I finally did after that first sip! Gulp. Then I remembered we were planning to start slow and that ‘hidden’ sugar was okay for this first week, really it was a week of giving up dessert, which I was certainly having more success with doing.

So I forgave myself and continued to drink, although I was indeed a touch guilty, but I will remember next time. Next week.

When Xerxes finally arrived, I realized I was still hungry. He graciously gave me some of his Reuben, chips and slaw while he dined.

We had casually noticed that T-storms were on the radar all week, but NPR was making grand declarations of flash floods. Later we found out the flood predictions were for Ft. After finding out the cafe was closing early so the crew could attend a funeral, we managed to get to Sloan’s Pub down the street from our house. We are officially regulars it seemed, but until today we didn’t realize it had wifi. Relief! Since we were running out of places to go and traffic was starting to interfere with our work day.

I tried a St. Germaine, Gin and Soda Water cocktail, while Xerxes had a beer for happy hour. We also had some wings and a quesadilla. Once we are done the sugar detox, we may have to figure out a way to curb our happy hour addiction. But, for now, we are relieved to have found Sloan’s.

And here is a quick toast to the rain that helps gardens grow! Enjoy,

Grilled Veggie, Red Bean & Quinoa Bowls stuffed in jars… the little one in front is for Juliette!

I woke up this morning to Juliette gleefully announcing that “today we will not be eating sugar!” I am as surprised as you are currently, although, I suspect this enthusiasm will wane sooner than I might like.

Xerxes planned to work since he had easy access to the equipment for his experiment, but he was leisurely in his departure and made us coffee and Eggs in a Hole first.

Since he was packing up and the day was clearly warming up, being at home did not sound like fun. I decided to find a new Farmers Market to check out and realized there was one in Old Towne Arvada that was going on. Lulu arrived just in time to join us and we packed up a mini-picnic just in case.

The market was very nice, an approachable size with a couple of places for produce and fruit. Surrounding the market was some sort of fair going on with lots of fried options and sweets to choose from, in between insurance salesmen and home improvement companies with booths. It became our first noticeable challenge of sorts.

In reality, I rarely feel tempted by fair food, but seeing Root Beer Floats for $2, Funnel Cakes and Lemonade with half of lemons floating in it makes one take a pause. But, happily knowing today would not be a day for treats made it even easier to walk on by. Juliette didn’t seem to notice.

We did spend an exceptionally long time debating whether we should buy another 20lb box of peaches, seeing as this is probably our last chance of the season. We are allowing ourselves to have fruit this week, but 20lbs eventually seemed too excessive. Instead we bought a 4lb bag and walked towards the Belgian Frites shop instead. Somehow that seems a bit lacking in balance, but we felt compelled to try these famous fries with a side of mayo touched with a bit of dijon. They also sold hot dogs, but knowing we had them at home we stayed focus on just the fries. photo-110

We eventually made our way back home to the hot dogs that we topped with sauerkraut, sliced tomatoes and mustard, not ketchup. photo-111

Soon after lunch I spoke to Xerxes and we planned to meet at the playground for a very early picnic dinner. I immediately got to work preparing dinner which I decided would be a layered dish stuffed into mason jars. And since I haven’t shared a recipe in awhile, here you go:

Grilled Veggie, Quinoa, & Red Bean Bowl
The red beans were simmered from scratch and surprisingly tasty without any seasoning. But, you may want to give it a boost of flavor with some ground coriander, cumin, smoked paprika, hot chile peppers or more. Instead of spicing up the beans, we dolloped on the Hatch Chile Cream recipe below.

1 zucchini, sliced into 2-3 long pieces
2 onion, sliced into 3-4 pieces
2 bell peppers, any shade
2 tablespoons olive oil

1 cup dried quinoa
2 cups water or broth
1 1/2 cups red beans, cooked and warm

Heat a grill or grill pan over high heat. Dip and rub the thick slices of vegetables and sprinkle with the salt. Clean the grill, if needed and reduce the heat to medium-low. Sear the vegetables on each side until char marks appear. As the vegetables come off the grill, chop them into pieces.

Meanwhile, bring the quinoa and water or broth up to a boil. Reduce to a simmer for about 15 minutes.

Layer the mason jars with a 1/2 cup of cooked quinoa, 1/2 cup of cooked beans, and the chopped grilled vegetables. Dollop on this sauce below as desired:

Hatch Chile Sauce

4 roasted hatch chiles, deseeded, stem removed and gently washed
1/2 cup greek yogurt

Place together in a blender and whip until smooth.

The rest of the evening as somewhat expected, Lulu and I mostly discussed how this was the time of day that we clearly enjoyed a sweet treat and we were a bit sad without it.

Fortunately, we split a peach and a plum between all of us and I had a couple ounces of red wine. We plan to give up the fresh fruit and wine in the coming weeks, but for now we are happy to let them get us by during this dessert elimination week.

Good night friends!

Over our morning granola-honey-yogurt-delicious Colorado peach breakfast, I told Juliette we were going to take a break from eating sugar. She looked down at her plate, up at me and said  matter of factually, “we will not be eating this.”

This was not the conversation I had anticipated having. Apparently, this giving up sugar thing is going to be easier than I thought. At least in conversation. We then proceeded to discuss other foods that have sugar in them.

Secretly, I wanted to binge on sugar all day in preparation for the hiatus. But, other than a cupcake at our two-year old buddy’s birthday party I have not been getting too crazy. Oh and the totally random Cheese Danish, Juliette and I bought while waiting for Xerxes to pick us up.

Prior to the pretty purple & chocolate cupcakes, we had a yummy Kale Slaw (a recipe I shared with my friend a while ago that I keeping meaning to put up on Lilly’s Table), a Quinoa & Grape Salad and Hawaiian Pizza.

You know those day’s where you feel you are eating all day, but you still feel hungry for more? That was me today. So, when I got home I found myself making a quesadilla.

Later, Lulu picked a big basket of tomatoes with intentions for Gazpacho. It was amazing and I adored the fact that she didn’t add anything other than vegetables and spices. Xerxes meanwhile grilled up a huge slab of steak. I didn’t want to be left out of the cooking fun, so I chopped up the following:

And then whipped it with room temperature butter and a drizzle of olive oil. We sliced Seeduction Bread from Whole Foods to go with the Nasturtium Fig Butter.

Dinner was leisurely and we ended by raiding the freezer of any leftover treats, but it was really just the last nibs of our Ice Cream Sandwiches from Sweet Cow that Xerxes bought the other day.

Now, the real fun will begin tomorrow when we are a bit less care-free about the treats we enjoy.

Good night!

Lilly

photo-107Juliette ran into our room this morning with a loud good-morning and then requested “Porridge, please!” Clearly someone is enjoying her new Three Little Pigs book.

Xerxes rolled over and asked what exactly porridge might be. Why oatmeal, of course. And then I mentioned I was pretty sure I had used it all of the last batch of granola.

We still had some steel-cut oats lying around and since Juliette had woken up rather earlier, there was plenty of time to simmer them into submission with raisins too.

I actually had mine with a bit of peanut butter, because I can’t really handle the sugar crash after.

Then Juliette helped me pack her lunch:
Leftover Chicken Leg
Cherry Tomatoes, Carrot & Celery Sticks with Tzatziki Sauce
A few Whole Grain Crackers
Homemade Yogurt with Raisinsphoto-106She was very excited about everything. In general, she was just thrilled for another day of school and to meet up with her friend who missed yesterday to be with her family for Yom Kippur.

I was able to work for a few hours after dropping Juliette of at school, while Zed slept in the ergo. We stopped in to Whole Foods where I lined up at the burrito bar for a quinoa-carnitas-black bean-veggie-salsa packed wrap. It was only a bit more hectic when I attempted to pay for it and Zed decided to be squirmy and challenging. Fortunately, he was also very smiley to a group of ladies on a lunch break.

At this crazy moment, I jumped in the car to pick up Xerxes and we headed to the preschool for a parent-teacher conference. We suddenly felt more grown up than we felt, but our chat with the teacher was pleasant and lovely.

After this we headed to Lulu’s teashop. Xerxes enjoyed a Chicken Salad Croissant, Juliette had a fruit salad and I had a scone. Of course, we all had tea too.

This day of running around led to a bit of quiet time in the afternoon and I followed with a Greek Salad full of chunks of leftover chicken from last night, summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, kalamatas, artichoke hearts, marinated garlic, and fresh herbs. For the special addition, I chopped up a leftover flatbread and seared it in olive oil, salt and garlic. The little croutons were the perfect finish.

Dinner ended barely after dark and we headed inside for a popcorn and movie night. With a mid-movie break of the Puffed Corn Treats from yesterday.

Sweet dreams!

photo-105After all the vacation fun, being sure to wake up and actually get everyone out the door to Juliette’s first day of school was a challenge. But, it was well worth all of the joyful moments of the day.

Breakfast was the last Plum Kuchen we will probably have until next year. I loved the way it overlapped with this exciting new start. I believe Juliette did as well.

Packing her lunch was a bit of a highlight of the day. She had two small containers. One with yogurt, raisins and a bit of granola, the other was homemade Hummus and a sprinkle of feta cheese. She also packed herself a handful of carrots, celery, and cherry tomatoes. I gave her a slice of bread, cut into four pieces.

In the end she devoured the yogurt, cherry tomatoes, and bread. She didn’t do much with the Hummus and there were several carrots and celery leftover. That lunch seemed successful, overall.

Can I just say, it is so joyful to walk up to a playground and see how happy your sweet daughter is playing?

We ran errands together and some little girl got shiny silver sneakers that she is so proud of. When we returned home, we each had a bit of hang time before realizing we were in need of  a snack. I warmed pitas from the other day to go with hummus and she requested a quesadilla. I am pretty sure she has liked hummus in the past, but once again she rejected the hummus, instead gobbling up my pitas solo. I gently informed her the whole point of the pita was to have a smear of hummus on top. She didn’t buy it.

When Lulu got home I ran out to the Farmers Market by myself. Which was a nice quick break from sleeping Zed and excited Juliette. I picked up the most fragrant little melon, a long cucumber, almost squishy ripe peaches, and corn on the cob.

The corn quickly ended up on the grill. Followed by the chicken pieces lightly seasoned with smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Meanwhile, I chopped up a zucchini, kale and ripe peach with a balsamic dressing. Nothing fancy, but easy and satisfying.

After dinner though, I started getting creative and realized I needed to get rid of those Homemade Marshmallows I brought home from Washington. The only other way I think to enjoy marshmallows in general are in rice krispie treat form. Seeing as I did not have rice krispies, I thought to do popcorn. But, then I saw that we had this puffed corn cereal.

photo-101photo-102photo-103photo-104So, I melted a stick of butter, folded in the marshmallows and made it saucy. Then we started to raid the cabinets. First, I grabbed marcona almonds, cashews, blobs of peanut butter, and unsweetened coconut. With a generous pinch of coarse salt. I was trying to figure out ways to balance the otherwise intense sweetness of the melted marshmallows. It worked!

We put blobs in cupcake liners tucked into a muffin tin. I then proceeded to lick the bowl, because it is not everyday you get to do that, right?

What other types of everything but the kitchen sink treats could I make? Feel free to suggest!

Good night!

photo-99When the ingredients for Plum Kuchen are available, it does not matter if you made it the day before: you must make it. We all slept in again, but when Juliette woke up we agreed Plum Kuchen would be happening.

As much as I adore this sweet breakfast treat, I was also craving something savory. With the plants overflowing with tomatoes, basil and just four eggs in the fridge, single egg omelets were our destiny. We were all quite satisfied and then followed up with our breakfast dessert.  photo-98

Not long after that we headed out to one of my favorite spots in Denver… the original Savory Spice Shop. They have been popping out all across the country and just being in them with their intoxicating smells of herbs, spices, curries and peppers is satisfying. Bringing home the little baggies of joy is even better. Jeannette, Gaby and I stocked up on what we needed and then asked for a recommendation of a good spot for lunch.

photo-93

Fortunately, it was right next door and just as their spices are spot on so was their recommendation. We started with a medley of gorgeous olives that Juliette could not stop eating and then ordered a chilled Snap Pea, Asparagus & Leek Soup for each of us that was refreshingly perfect for the warm day. My sandwich had Lemon Ricotta with Artichokes and Gaby’s was Proscuitto with Pesto and other delights. Jeannette had a simple Caprese Salad with hearty gorgeous tomatoes. Juliette had her own bruschetta with Prosciutto, Mascarpone, Fig Jam & Pistachios. She loved it. Actually, we all loved our food.photo-95Which was good, because dinner for Xerxes and I was not nearly as exciting, but certainly tasty and it was lovely to have a quick mini date together after all of the family time. Juliette went to her dance class and we headed to Sloan’s for our typical Modus Hoperande beer with Grilled Artichokes. Yum. When we realized this may be dinner, since we had our first ever pre-school Parent Session right after her class, we decided to order Chicken Wings too.

The eating-out craziness of the day did not end there. As we headed back from the Parent Meeting, the Sweet Cow craving over took and Xerxes headed that way. I waited in the car with Zed and he came out with a Sundae and a couple of Ice Cream Sandwiches for Lulu and I to fight over. I ended up just helping him with his large Sundae selection as we drove home. It was a crazy combination with Mint Chocolate & Coffee Ice Cream drizzled with Fudge & Caramel Sauce and the best part was the Homemade Whipped Cream smothering the entire thing.

I am looking for a bit more of a homemade day tomorrow. I have adored all of the time spent with family, but am realizing it wavers between completely homemade food and eating out. Regardless, it has been a week of tastiness!

Good night my friends,

Lilly

My sister Jeannette and I typically dine our way through chit-chats and small adventures together and this trip was no different.

Before arriving Jeannette requested we make sweet treats and have a tea party together. Lulu (Xerxes’ Mom) recently took a job at the Corner Cupboard Tea House, which is nearby and that seemed the perfect substitute to doing the whole thing ourselves especially since her visit is relatively brief.

When we woke up in the morning, though, we did make a sweet treat of Plum Kuchen which is a family classic. My parent’s have an Italian Prune Plum tree. While plums aren’t my favorite fruit, the Italian Prune Plums are one of my top favorite fruits of all time. I am hoping to plant a tree of them one of these days I love them that much.

I make a kuchen with a bit of almond meal to make it a little lower-glycemic with a bit extra flavor. Heavenly!

The three of us whipped it up together and it had barely cooled when we dug in. Minutes after devouring most of the kuchen we headed to Lulu’s Tea House.

We  started with a Velvet Tea that was Rooibos based and shared the pot of tea. Part of the charm is you can choose your own sweet antique tea cup & saucer. Then we ordered Chicken Salad Sandwich on a Croissant and a Spinach & Goat Cheese Quiche to share. Both of them came with lovely green salads. Juliette ordered fruit with Mac n Cheese. The Chicken Salad was similar to my Sonoma Chicken Salad I made last week. The quiche was also nice with tons of greens and a goat cheese-y flavor.

We finished our meal with a Maple Pecan Scone and Blueberry Scone with Creme Fraiche and Lemon Curd. We also decided to try a second tea: the Happy Tea.

Lulu did a great job serving us! Juliette loved the whole experience, especially having her Lulu there. I can’t wait to go back for the full tea and I hope to bring some of Juliette’s little girlfriends. Maybe around the holiday’s we could do a Christmas Tea Party.

Then we ran home, picked up Xerxes and headed up to Boulder to meet Gaby’s cousins who have a three year old and a baby on the way. They have a beautiful home on Pearl Street, close to a creek and the foothills.

The kids hit it off quickly and after playing for a while they sat down to lemon-water in teacups with pears. Juliette was very happy for her second tea party of the day.

Then we took the kids on their bikes and headed up to the creek where we splashed around in the water up to our knees. It was a gorgeous spot, perfect weather and incredible company.

When we returned it was clearly dinner time, so we decided to stay close to home and ordered Nepalese from Sherpas in Boulder. The food from Nepal is tastiness around this area and again sitting on the floor of their small table was just a perfect way to end our evening.

Gaby and Jeannette came back with us and then we chit-chatted until way too late. Which is why this is a good-morning post, rather than good-night!

xoxo,

Lilly

Today was a bit of a crazy day as we were still adjusting to being back in Colorado and the best part was that my sister Jeannette and her fiancé Gaby arrived!

In an effort to spend time with her, I am going to make this snappy…

We had a typical breakfast of coffee, eggs & toast. Then I realized we probably needed some groceries. For whatever reason it took me forever to get out the door at which point I was feeling quite hungry and left the house while shoving a quesadilla in my mouth for lunch.

When Jeannette and Gaby arrived we had to meet and greet for a bit. Then I whipped up a big huge batch of hummus that very well may last us all week. We dined on that with tomatoes, olives, pickles, macarona nuts, and pita breads.

Then I made the announcement that we should walk down to the lake. We did and enjoyed fluffy pink sunset clouds on the way.

When we got back from the long walk we realized we needed ice cream. Off to Sweet Cow we drove! Jeannette loved it so much, she declared we should certainly go again tomorrow to try another flavor.

Windmill on the drive along the gorge

Arriving into Gifford Pinchot I felt instantly at home. As an adult I have been to some of the most beautiful mountains and forests, but these trees are mine. I felt instantly sappy and nostalgic despite the fact that it has been well over 15 years since my family went huckleberry picking and my memories are spotty at best.

Before our departure, we started the morning with Zucchini Scrambled Eggs and toast with Raspberry Butter. This fueled us up for the biggest chore of running around doing last minute packing. We did manage to get everything packed into the two cars without looking too much like we were overdoing it.

The day before our departure we found out there was no longer the delicious mountain fresh water being pumped into the campground. So we filled a couple of old water jugs. The next morning they were a leaky puddle. Fortunately, we had more and it was not that big of a deal.

Originally we planned a 9am departure. That quickly became apparent we would be leaving closer to 11am. But, we made it on the road with iced coffee in hands.

The gorge as always was *gorgeous* to drive along. We decided to follow google maps, not our traditional route, which meant crossing over to Oregon. When we got to the town of Rufus, a cop car with flares made it seem like an accident must have been up a head. After being re-directed for about an hour, much of it going just a few miles per hour we finally made it to Hood River. We pulled into a Starbucks and tailgated. We were all too exhausted to find a beautiful picnic spot, which was the original intention, but we happily made do gobbling on the Sonoma Chicken Salad Sandwiches with swiss cheese.

Tailgating in Hood River

We arrived to a very rainy campsite, which made the dirt roads a little less dusty, but everything was a bit muddy as a result. The campsite we found was one we enjoyed several years ago. I don’t remember it, but it was cozy with plenty of space for three tents including my parent’s gigantic new one.

Since it was raining we periodically would dash into the tent with our camping chairs. Xerxes eventually took the initiative to put up a large tarp over the picnic table. This was perfect for allowing me to chop without being interrupted by the occasional dumps of rain.

As soon as allowed, I started chopping up the veggies from my parent’s garden including zucchini, eggplant, small green bell peppers and a big old onion. We set up the new Coleman grill with the griddle across the top and sautéed each veggie in batches. Then I pulled out the huge marinated tri-tip and started to sear it. A few minutes into the sear, we realized this steak would take forever to cook through. So, Xerxes butterflied the steak and everything worked out much better.

We set up our chairs under the tent, while munching on chips with guacamole. Once the steak was done we warmed tortillas on the fire and thinly sliced the steaks. Piles of sautéed veggies were added and then we wrapped them up for dinner under the tarp.

photo-88Saying good-bye to family and happy shared memories is always sad. But, starting the morning with eggs, sausage and Huckleberry Pie makes it a bit better. I am planning to share the whole fabulous huckleberry camping story soon, but I need to get you caught up on today’s travels first.

My Mom helped me with the final packing including making us Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Sandwiches for our lunch. We also grabbed the Oatmeal Cookies that my nieces had made and we had not finished eating.

The biggest food part of the day however was packing all the great deliciousness that just had to come back with us to Colorado. This included not only two bags of frozen huckleberries, but our own chunk of my Dad’s smoked salmon. Our family friend’s Italian prune plums and my parent’s cucumbers were tucked into bags alongside the frozen items.

This seemed easy enough, but TSA at the Pasco Airport was not as excited about it. They nicely unpacked everything and I think they were rather charmed by the suitcase full of produce, but it was certainly a challenge to figure out how we had so carefully managed to get it all in there originally.

On the flight, we listened to a couple of kids screeching with joy and occasional frustration. Thankfully they were not our children, but I had deep sympathy for the mom flying solo with them.

Halfway through the flight Juliette and I toasted our glasses of sparkling water and dined on Sandwiches. And then she watched more of Ratatouille. Fortunately, it was a relatively quick flight.

So, we cuddled up and took nap together.photo-89

I woke up hungry. So, Xerxes, Lulu and I collaborated on a delightful meal that showcased the stars of our garden. Lulu started by shredding up one of my parent’s cucumbers into Tzatziki. Xerxes threw two ears of corn, a head of cauliflower and chicken drumsticks on the grill. Then we picked additional vegetables from the garden including the abundant Juliet tomatoes, yellow crookneck squash and super spicy arugula and sweet basil.

photo-87All the vegetables were chopped into a pretty salad and we smeared Tzatziki across with greens, chicken and cauliflower alongside.

photo-90Juliette insisted we eat the cookies for dessert which was the perfect finish.

Sweet dreams friends! I have more to share about huckleberries and can’t wait, but I am currently too sleepy…
