Can you see me?
Fine. I don’t see me, either, but I am in there somewhere waving, because Alton Brown was taking my photo (and um… I suppose about 2,000 other people too) right before I spent the next few hours laughing until I had little tears in my eyes and my cheeks hurt from smiling.
Just last week, my dear friend and collaborator Dr. Kaycie Rosen Grigel contacted me after hearing that our favorite celeb chef was heading to Greely. After a few arrangements we had a couple of the final seats in the packed house. Wednesday night, we sat in the warm theater after dashing from her car in -15 degree weather. Mind numbingly cold. Actually, teeth-numbing. And also any-piece-of-flesh-exposed-numbing. Maybe that was why my cheeks hurt…

Indeed, I have to share a few of the highlights as Alton showed off some of “what he can’t do on television”. This included everything from making ice cream in ten seconds with a fire extinguisher to a the ultimate Mega Bake Oven, inspired by the Easy Bake Oven Santa never brought him as a child because they are for girls. (As an aside, I recently watched this Ted talk about a young girl who became an activist after starting an online petition to Hasbro to rebrand the Easy Bake Oven for boys since her little brother wanted one too. I kind of think Alton would be proud, although his cranked up version was a tad more incredible and capable of much tastier results).
My favorite part overall was the story style introduction of Alton’s “10 Things I am pretty sure I am sure about food”. He talked about the importance of washing the poop (yup, it ain’t dirt people!) off of mushrooms which I have been doing and preaching ever since I saw the Good Eats show where he weighed and measured the before and after of washing verses brushing off the poop. He also addressed the “what food to buy question?” with the encompassing response of “buy American food”, because organic asparagus from Chile in November is crazy especially when there are so many good winter vegetables available right now. I should know as I am a bit obsessed with cooking seasonally. 😉
During his monologue, I was most thrilled when he talked about the kitchen table as the most critical tool in your kitchen. Sitting and taking time to dine on a beautiful creation with friends and family is more important than getting that plate of food just perfect. It made me proud that my business is called Lilly’s Table as well.
Without a doubt, if Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour is heading your way do not hesitate to buy tickets. This is not the Food Network censored and toned down for every American consumer, this is Alton Brown having a blast and taking us on a ride with him. Be sure to hop on, as you will not regret it.
